Winners and Awesome News!!

First of all, Congratulations to our June Refer-A-Friend winner… Sandy Ehlrich!!

And our Vendor Appreciation gift goes to the Buehler Family!!

Between Phil and Matt Buehler who supply our popular pork products, and Josh and Stephanie (J & S Buehler Family Farm) with their beef (as well as son Landon’s famous eggs!), their family has promoted this market and supported this concept every step of the way since our inception, from those early days prior to securing our own Heath Dept license, when Phil came down with his freezer van to be able to store their beef and pork until you came to pick it up. You have to appreciate the type of people who are always first to arrive and last to leave, ones you know you can always count on. Kinder folks you’re not likely to meet, and I’m so grateful to have had their help and backing for this market!! Thanks to you all :-)

Thanks especially to Stephanie for the tender chuck roast samples tonight at pick-up!! Mmmmm – and oh so simple!!

Speaking of simple, which is just what we need as we head into a busy summer, King’s Poultry has two essential new products to unveil tonight…

Chicken Pot Pies, and Chicken Bone Broth!!

No joke – you’ve asked for convenient meal options, and what could be better than a delicious 9" pot pie with King’s fabulous chicken, plus veggies and gravy that you didn’t have to fix?? Just pop it in the oven and you have delicious dinner!! Plus versatile Bone Broth, from King’s non-GMO chicken, I didn’t have to make? Amazing!!

Congratulations to A Taste of Sugar Bakery, who passed her Home Bakery inspection and will now offer all kinds of cheesecakes, pies, and desserts on the Market! Yay!

And so everyone knows, this is the Last Week to order before Fourth of July – the Market WILL NOT reopen next Tuesday after pick-up!! We will take a one-week break and open back up on Tue evening July 3rd with even more local goodness – we’re open this week for orders until 8pm Sunday just as normal, but then NO orders next week!!

Happy Shopping!!

Have a Happy Father's Day tomorrow!

Does a more demanding, rewarding, or important profession exist than Fatherhood (Motherhood not withstanding, of course)?

And it’s even more than just Dad… so many men, whether another relative, friend, teacher, neighbor, coach, with that special mentoring instinct, make a powerful impact on our lives… do we always take the opportunity to appreciate them as they deserve?

So, to all the “Fathers” out there in our Happy Market Family, Thank You for everything – we hope you get to enjoy a Happy Father’s Day!

TOMORROW: Free Tour of King's Poultry Plant!

The time for the Free tour of King and Son’s Poultry Processing plant is here!!
Tomorrow June 16th at 10pm!

Drop ins are welcome if you did not sign up yet! Their address? 8091 Horatio Harris Creek Road in Bradford!

Featured as a stop on the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s Farm Tour Series, we’ll have the opportunity to tour one of the ONLY federally inspected poultry processors in the state of Ohio!! Folks come from out of state to utilize the King’s incredible facility and customer service – and they’re in OUR backyard?! Awesome!! :-)

See their pristine facility where they process flocks of every size, including the birds they raise with Non-GMO feed on their own farm – what better way to guarantee the highest quality products than by handling EVERYTHING from the raising to creating the brat recipes to carefully wrapping the final frozen package?!

There’ll be plenty of time to ask questions, visit their retail store, and maybe even learn how to improve your own efficiency in processing your backyard flock (or realize how well and affordably they can take care of that for you!)?

We have HONEY!!

Doc Allen of Pumpkin Patch has extracted the first honey of the season!

We’ve waited long enough! The raw Early Honey is so delicate in flavor and very light colored – from Acacia or Locust tree nectar. Always unfiltered, unheated, and packaged in glass jars – right here in Troy!

And be sure to check out some of the products on the Market made with Pumpkin Patch honey… Lemon Honey Buttons, Einkorn and Honey Loaf, Gluten-Free Sandwich Bread, and Fruit Bars! Collaboration is what we love (to eat!) :-)

New Winners for May, and a Goodbye

Here we are at the end of May, ready to unveil the next Refer-A-Friend Winner…

Erin Barsotti!

And May’s Vendor Appreciation gift goes to…

Jeanne and Tom Ceyler, of Jeanne’s Kitchen!

Sadly, we must say Goodbye to Jeanne as she retires from our Market, after 13 years of involvement in farmer’s markets across Miami and Shelby counties with her baked goods, desserts, jams, and produce!

When I turned into Jeanne and Tom Ceyler’s driveway to meet with them before they joined our market in 2016, to say I was shocked would be an understatement. I had no idea I would be entering a paradise of edible landscaping! Numerous fruit trees, succulent herbs, vegetable gardens, and gorgeous flowers surrounded her charming home. In my head I ran through the many fruits, vegetables and herbs she incorporates into her jams, desserts, and breads… and they were all here just waiting for her to use, right outside her door!

I have a deep appreciation for well-maintained gardens, and I understand the love and commitment it takes to keep them bearing heavily and looking beautiful. I also realize just how long it takes to pick enough berries to make a pie, that’s always devoured far too quickly! Just walking up to her front door, I wished time would allow me to spend a lovely afternoon wandering the meandering paths and beds that entirely encompass her acre slice of heaven.

We’ve been surprised by Jeanne many times – her widespread assortment of jams and her unusual flavors (I had never heard of corn cob jelly or thought of growing chocolate mint for cookies!)… Ryan Leach of Live Simply Live Richly Farm said it best – you look at Jeanne’s offerings and think, “Well that looks nice” – then you taste it and Wow, realize just how good she is at what she does. Not only that, but the many veggies, fruits and herbs she grows for her baked goods and jams is so impressive.

It was her Cottage Dill Bread she was baking while we talked, and I laughed when I saw her well-worn and clearly loved recipe, conveniently displayed on a wooden holder made by her husband. You can get such an intimate, honest idea about a person and their preferences by looking through their oft-used recipe books and finding their splattered, dog-eared, yellowed pages with all the necessary notations!

We’ve known Jeanne and Tom for a long time, since our first year at the Piqua Farmer’s Market – we were set up next to them during our initial venture into the world of Miami County’s wonderful markets. They were, and always have been, so welcoming, supportive, and friendly to us – I’m sad that the time has come for them to retire, but so glad to have had them as part of our Market Family!
