I am a student at Miami East High School and a Member of the MVCTC-Miami East FFA Chapter.
As part of FFA I am doing an SAE (supervised agricultural experience). Growing up on a certified organic dairy farm, I easily could have chosen a project with the cows, but I wanted to try something new, where I could learn to run my own business and market my own products.
I chose to raise pasture-raised meat chickens. I raise my chickens in large portable pens and move them 2-3 times a day so that they have fresh healthy green grass to eat throughout the day. I supplement their diet with Certified Organic, Non-GMO feed. Currently I am selling whole chickens and sausage. I’m excited that I met my goal this past year of becoming certified organic! I continuing to work towards by goal through my FFA SAE to earn a proficiency award and earn a trip to Ireland to learn about their farm practices.
Why should you choose pastured-raised?
Less total fat, more heart health omega-3 fatty acid, more conjugated linoleic acid – a type of fat thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risk, more antioxidant vitamins, higher in B vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium AND has better flavor!
