Appreciation of our Veterans

I realize I already shared this story to our Facebook page, but it’s too uplifting to not add it here as well, when I know many of you don’t do Facebook. I have no idea who this man is, but God Bless him!

“I was standing in line at Sam’s Club this morning, waiting for the doors to open (8:30am, doors open at 9am). I was #3 in a line of 50+ people.

I look and see an elderly gentleman (definitely in his late 80s+) parking in a handicap space. He exits his vehicle kind of hunched forward and with a four post walking cane, wearing a WWII VETERAN BALL CAP.

He slowly made his way to the door to check the sign stating the store hours, then started on his way to the end of the line. I stopped him and offered him my place in line, he politely refused, and resumed his walk toward the end of the line.

The store employee (maybe a manager), seeing and hearing our exchange of words, gently grasped this gentleman’s arm and said these words that I will never forget…

“Sir, we need soldiers to blaze a safe path for the rest of us to follow.”

He then walked this American Hero into the store 30 minutes prior to the scheduled opening to beat the hoarders to the essentials…

I salute both the Hero and the Sam’s employee. My faith in mankind has been restored, even if just for today. Stay kind, Thankful, and Carry On."

We did it!!

I am so happy and humbled.

Tonight could’ve been the biggest train wreck of a Market… In four years we’ve never had this number of customers, or products coming in, in a single week. Like everyone else during these crazy times, we’ve had to adjust and attempt to find a new normal (while feeling very Blessed that both the First United Methodist Church and the Miami County Health Dept allowed us to continue to operate).

And yet because of my wonderful vendors, who did everything I had to ask of them, and you fabulous customers, who stuck with us thru the new protocol and learning curve, I’m already at home, not much later than normal, getting the baby to bed and ready to reopen the Market for another week.

I am so Grateful to everyone for their patience, understanding, smiles, kindness, and prayers. This truly is the greatest community. I love being part of it every week. Thanks to Phil Buehler and May Alanzi, my volunteers tonight, who were absolutely stellar. And my biggest thanks goes to my husband and kids, who helped me prepare all week for tonight, and had everything so organized and set up so efficiently this morning even I couldn’t mess it up. Lucy, Joseph, and Mary made it their mission to try to include a handwritten note, drawing, or pleasantry in as many orders as they could (they managed more than half!), and they were just tickled pink when I got home by how many folks had already sent their thanks. It feels good to care about each other. Who doesn’t want to be needed and appreciated? And we certainly all do need each other.

I don’t remember another time in my life when so many folks, outside of my own family, sincerely inquired after my health, or assured me of their prayers. How amazing, and encouraging!

Thank you for making tonight a wonderful experience. Good thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

Feeling Blessed and Thankful

I have never been so happy to be part of this wonderful market community as I was tonight.

You’re always a friendly bunch of folks, but tonight, I was so encouraged by your positivity and kindness, which are things we certainly could all use right now.

In your sharing stories of the generous acts you’d witnessed or the kindnesses you’d either received or freely given, you gave me hope – and that’s a powerful thing.

And regardless whether I “should” say this or not, I am grateful how many times tonight I heard, “I will continue to pray.” Talk about making an impact!

So Thank You dearly friends, and please share the word that we are open :-)

We are MORE than happy to bring your order out to your car on Tuesday for real, friendly curbside service! It was easy tonight for folks to call or text to let me know they arrived, so we could meet them outside. Any way we can help, please don’t hesitate to ask.

And the Food Pantry thanks you for your continued generous donations, which you can drop off with us any Tuesday.

We’re all in this together :-)

Overfield School Gala!!

Thanks to long-time customer, Erin Barsotti, for sharing this opportunity from Overfield School in Troy!!

“Hello Friends!

Miami County Locally Grown community is a such a unique and valuable part of our community! My family and many of our friends participate, and we truly appreciate the delicious, unique, and care-filled products that we purchase on a regular basis.

Another place unique to our community is The Overfield School. It’s a school in Troy that serves toddler through second grade children. Our school shares many values with the Market community, a sense of the importance of local community and a (children) “can do” attitude being two of these. Students spend much time each day outside on our campus, at Hobart Preserve, and in the woods adjoining campus, wondering and learning in the natural world. They are also given a plethora of time for self-expression and exploration as they participate in student-initiated project work. Any child’s day at Overfield might include tapping Maple trees as part of the syrup-making process, working in the vegetable garden, clay work, or constructing with large appliance boxes.

Many of you have met my daughter, Luciana (Luciana’s Lovely Scrunchies), who embarked on a sewing and scrunchie-selling venture as part of the Market. She is an alum whose interest in and ability to follow through with a small business project can, in large part, be traced back to her early childhood experience at Overfield.

Attached is a letter explaining Overfield’s Gala for Growth, taking place on March 14. We are seeking products and “experiences” of any size for our silent and live auctions. Anything you might choose to contribute is much appreciated! In the past we have received donations of products, as well as baking, cooking, soap and other “making” classes, and tours. Again, thank you for the amazing products that you make available on the Market week after week and for your dedication to our local community!"

Sincerely,
Erin Barsotti

“Dear Sir or Madam,

Overfield is a school where joy, wonder and imagination foster life-long learning in preschool aged children. The Reggio Emilia philosophy supports our school’s mission to support self-discovery and creativity through a child-centered, responsive curriculum. A beautiful campus, committed teachers and a supportive learning community make Overfield a place where children bloom.

Why We Need Your Help: Unlike most other schools, Overfield receives no city, state, or federal support. As an independent school and non-profit,?501©(3) organization (ID#31-1088546), we must build our own support through fundraising activities. The Overfield School’s fundraising helps to provide engaging environments and experiences for young children that foster discovery, collaboration, independence and a joy for learning. An Overfield School Community Gala for Growth will be held on March 14th, 2020?with the purpose of raising money to install new playground equipment and natural play space that appeals to first, second, and third graders, and our summer campers. The money we raise will also support continued professional development for our teachers, which improves the quality of education for all Overfield children.

Please Consider a Donation:? Please consider donating an auction item or a gift certificate for your goods or services. If your services do not lend themselves to an auction, please consider sponsoring an auction item by making a cash donation. In the past, we have purchased bicycles, gift certificates, theater tickets and other great prizes on behalf of our sponsors.

All contributions made to The Overfield School Community Gala for Growth are 100% tax-deductible.

Please know that your donation will directly impact the Overfield students and the greater community. On behalf of all Overfield families, we thank you for your willingness to help make our gala a success. We greatly appreciate your time and consideration. We feel very fortunate to have Overfield in the Miami Valley, and are reliant on generous businesses such as yours to support our school as we grow.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. To learn more about our wonderful school and community, please visit www.overfield.org?or call to schedule a visit to see our great school in action! We’d love to invite you to join us at The Overfield School Community Gala for Growth on March 14th. Please contact The Overfield School to purchase tickets!"

Sincerely,
The Overfield School
